Recently, the team in charge of the 12 – inch semiconductor project under Bosch’s Industrial Technology Division paid a visit to Guangzhou Semicore Semiconductor Co., Ltd.
According to official sources from Semicore Semiconductor, to meet the ever – growing demand from end – use markets, Bosch’s existing 6 – inch and 8 – inch chip fabs can no longer satisfy the chip needs of its own product lines. Consequently, the company has turned its attention to 12 – inch chip production lines that offer greater economies of scale. Construction work for this 12 – inch chip production line started with piling in March 2018, a groundbreaking ceremony was held on April 24 the same year, and the construction was completed by the end of 2019. It was scheduled to officially enter mass production at the end of 2021, with a monthly production capacity of 20,000 wafers.
As for Semicore Semiconductor, it started piling work in March 2018, topped out its main plant in October of the same year, moved in production equipment in March 2019, finished the commissioning of production equipment and started wafer probing in June, and initiated the ramp – up to mass production on September 20. It took Semicore Semiconductor a full two years less than Bosch to proceed from the piling stage to full – scale mass production.
Data shows that Guangzhou Semicore Semiconductor Technology Co., Ltd. was founded in December 2017. It is China’s first 12 – inch chip manufacturing enterprise adopting the Virtual IDM business strategy. It houses Guangzhou’s first 12 – inch chip production line and stands as the only 12 – inch chip production platform that has entered mass production in Guangdong Province and the Guangdong – Hong Kong – Macao Greater Bay Area so far. As a local enterprise in Guangdong Province, which is market – oriented, privately capitalized and fully supported by the government, Semicore Semiconductor has adopted a business positioning featuring differentiation, segmentation and customization. By integrating resources including chip design, packaging and testing, end – use applications and industrial funds, it has taken the first crucial step towards building a complete semiconductor industrial chain in the Guangdong – Hong Kong – Macao Greater Bay Area.
Semicore Semiconductor stated that the extensive end – use market for chips will fuel the rapid growth of both Bosch and itself, and also boost the strategic cooperation between the two parties.
